Celebrating 40 Years

In 2026, we’re proud to celebrate 40 years of Bunbury Wildlife Park.

Here’s to the people, the passion and the wildlife that made it all possible.

Learn more about Bunbury Wildlife Park

  • Bunbury Wildlife Park was originally established as “Big Swamp Bird Park” and officially opened to the public on 14 September 1986. The development of the park was funded by the City of Bunbury and initially operated under lease by the South West Avicultural Society.

With a strong focus on educating both locals and visitors about the unique fauna of the South West, the park’s original centrepiece was an impressive walk-in aviary measuring 1,300 square metres and six metres high. It housed approximately 500 birds across 35 species, including finches, lorikeets, parrots, quail, doves, and softbills.

In the mid-1990s, management of the park transitioned to a management committee, followed by a period of private leasing from 1992 to 1996, while ownership of the grounds remained with the City of Bunbury.

In February 1997, the City of Bunbury resumed full operational control and established a volunteer-based management structure, which continued to support the park’s ongoing development and community focus.

  • Bunbury Wildlife Park is dedicated to inspiring a love of wildlife and encouraging meaningful action for conservation through education, discovery, and hands-on experiences.

Home to a diverse range of native and exotic species, the park offers engaging and memorable wildlife encounters that foster understanding, respect, and appreciation for the incredible diversity of wildlife across our planet.

Through interactive experiences, educational programs, and close connections with wildlife, we aim to inspire our community and visitors to support conservation and help create a future where wildlife and people can thrive together.
