Mookaroo-k
Mookaroo (sometimes spelt Mukaru) is the Noongar word for the coldest season on the Indigenous calendar - a time marked by rain, storms, and long nights. Mookaroo‑k translates to “in Winter”.
Goomburrup
The name given to the Bunbury area by Traditional Owners, the Wardandi Noongar people. Goomburrup has long been a seasonal gathering place rich in food sources and home to important ceremonial sites.
The Bunbury Winter Festival honours our whole community, including Wardandi cultural heritage by bringing people together - just as Goomburrup always has. It celebrates the spirit of gathering, storytelling, and enjoying the City during its most atmospheric season, while paying respectful tribute to the region’s rich Noongar history.
