Bunbury Community Courts Project

Bunbury Basketball Association (BBA), with support from the City of Bunbury, is leading the Bunbury Community Courts Stadium project to design, construct and operate a new indoor multi-court facility Hay Park.

Interest and participation in all sports, including basketball, continue to grow in Bunbury and the South West, and it is crucial that we address the evolving needs of our community.

We know there is community support for more indoor courts in Bunbury as participation rates continue to rise and current options for training, development sessions, and games remain limited.

This project initially looked at the possible expansion of courts at South West Sports Centre to meet the growing demand. However, a more financially feasible option was identified in a standalone facility to be operated by the Bunbury Basketball Association (BBA) at Hay Park.

A parcel of land bounded by Socceroos Place has been earmarked for the facility, which is planned to have four indoor courts compliant with both basketball and netball regulations.

BBA is currently working to scope the project, with the aim of expanding the facility to six courts.

There is currently a little over $30 million allocated to this community project, including $25.74 million from the State Government plus $4.5 million from the City.

BBA has enlisted Ochre Project Services as the project manager, and with support from the City, has appointed SITE Architecture Studio to undertake the developed concept design.

Once a progressed detailed design is undertaken, the community project will go to market for final design and construction.

The City will be responsible for any surrounding works, such as car parking, landscaping, road alignments and service connections.

The facility will provide additional opportunities for year-round participation, growth and player pathway development, meeting future demand in Bunbury and the region.

Further, the facility will have the ability to host a variety of sporting activities and events, including netball, volleyball, and wheelchair sports – just to name a few – making it a community asset.

The inclusion of a show court with grandstand seating will allow BBA and the City to attract nationally accredited events such as Basketball Australia’s national championship tournaments with the potential for thousands of visitors to descend on Bunbury and the region.

South West Sports Centre is a City-owned and managed facility and will continue to be an important asset for Bunbury. Additional courts will free up SWSC for other sports and opportunities.
