A significant and dangerous storm system is forecast to impact our region and much of Western Australia's South West Land Division from Saturday evening, 30 May, through to Monday, 1 June 2026.
Published 29 May 2026

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that conditions associated with this system are only seen once every 3 to 5 years in the southwest of WA. Please take this warning seriously and prepare now.
What's expected
- Damaging to locally destructive wind gusts in excess of 125 km/h
- Heavy rainfall with potential for flash flooding, particularly through Saturday night and Sunday morning
- Thunderstorms accompanying the front and low pressure system
This warning extends across much of the South West Land Division and beyond – from Geraldton and Kalbarri in the north, through Perth, Bunbury, Margaret River and Albany, across to Esperance and inland to Merredin and Norseman. If you have family or friends in these areas, please make sure they're aware.
How to prepare your property
- Secure loose items around your property, including outdoor furniture, trampolines, bins and shade sails
- Park vehicles undercover and away from trees where possible
- Clear gutters and drains to reduce flooding risk
- Charge mobile devices and have a torch and batteries ready
- Identify the safest room in your home, away from windows
During the storm
- Stay indoors and away from windows – close curtains and blinds
- Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary
- Never go near fallen power lines – always treat them as live
- Stay clear of floodwater, swollen drains, rivers and streams
- Do not use landline telephones during lightning
- If you are outdoors, find safe shelter away from trees and power lines
Look after each other
This is a time to check in on those around you.
- Check on your neighbours – especially those who are elderly, live alone, or may need a hand preparing their property
- Offer to help secure loose items for someone who can't do it themselves
- Make sure family and friends have a plan and know what's coming
- Once the storm passes, keep an eye on your street and look out for anyone who may need assistance
We're a strong community and we get through these events by looking after one another.
