Bunbury City Council has tonight resolved not to proceed with the proposed disposal of freehold land at Lot 21 (89) Beach Road, South Bunbury.
The proposal formed part of the City's strategic land review and was publicly advertised, attracting 210 submissions. All submissions were provided to elected members and considered as part of Council's decision.
Mayor Jaysen Miguel said the level of community engagement on the proposal had been significant, and thanked everyone who took the time to have their say.
"We've heard a significant level of community feedback on this proposal, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to have their say," Mayor Miguel said.
"I also want to acknowledge the work of our administration in seeking to make good use of City-owned land and contribute to housing supply – a genuine priority for our community. Council has weighed all of these considerations and resolved not to proceed."
The City sincerely thanks the many community members who engaged with this proposal and took the time to share their views. Genuine community participation is a vital part of local decision-making, and the level of interest in this matter demonstrates a community that cares deeply about the future of our City.
"This is local democracy working as it should – the community engaging, the administration bringing forward options, and elected representatives making the final decision," Mayor Miguel said.
We value that engagement and look forward to continuing to work together on the issues that matter to Bunbury.
The site will remain in City ownership. Council has also requested that the CEO report back by the end of 2026 with options for rezoning the land to public open space.
"We respect Council's decision, and we'll now explore future options for the site – including its potential rezoning to public open space – in continued partnership with our community," Mayor Miguel said.
The City will continue to keep the community informed as the process progresses.
