The City of Bunbury is making significant progress on plans to upgrade the Pelican Point Boat Ramp and Fishing Platform, with a new design set to deliver improved capacity and useability for the community.
The much-loved facility, located on the shores of the Collie River, was built around 2000 and has served the Bunbury community well for approximately 25 years. However, after decades of exposure to harsh coastal conditions – including regular inundation during high tides and storm events – the infrastructure is nearing end-of-life and in need of renewal.
The City has engaged specialist design consultants to develop an innovative and sustainable design for a new boat ramp and fishing platform, with geotechnical investigations completed earlier this year and detailed design expected to be finalised by mid-2026.
The detailed design phase has been funded through a successful grant from the State Government's Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme (RBFS).
We know the Pelican Point Boat Ramp and Fishing Platform is a valued community facility. We have made great progress on the detailed design and will be applying for further funding through the Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme later this year to support the construction phase of the project.
The City will apply for RBFS construction funding in September 2026, with construction anticipated to commence in late 2027, subject to funding approval.
Winter closure
As the higher winter tides approach, the Pelican Point Boat Ramp and Fishing Platform will be temporarily closed from 2 June 2026 to ensure community safety.
Some of the plywood decking will be removed and the area fenced off for the duration of the winter period. A small area adjacent to the boat ramp will remain accessible where possible.
The fishing platform will be reinspected following winter, with the aim of having it operational for summer 2026/27.
