City prioritises community voice on offshore wind farm proposals

The City of Bunbury has committed to ensuring its entire community has access to factual information and genuine opportunity for input before the City takes any formal position on proposed offshore wind farm projects.

At its Ordinary Council Meeting last night, Council resolved for the City to write to the Minister for Climate Change and Energy and relevant State and Federal government agencies requesting a comprehensive community consultation plan for any proposed offshore wind farm projects affecting the Bunbury region.

Council also directed Chief Executive Officer Alan Ferris to monitor developments and provide regular briefings to Council, and present options for the City’s ongoing engagement once adequate information is available.

Following an informed and inclusive community engagement process, the CEO will also formally communicate the City’s findings and any community concerns to the Minister, State and Federal governments, and relevant agencies and environmental groups.

The resolution was driven by residents at the City’s Annual General Meeting of Electors in December 2025 when a motion regarding offshore wind farms was carried.

Mayor Jaysen Miguel said Council was listening to the sentiments of residents and was acting but stressed that any City position must be based on facts and reflect the views of the entire Bunbury community.

“Right now, there is a lot of misinformation and uncertainty circulating about these proposals and our community deserves to be informed,” Mayor Miguel said.

“The City has a responsibility to be a trusted, credible voice for our community. That means getting the facts first, sharing them with our residents, and then capturing genuine, informed community views.

“We can’t ask our community for informed input if we don’t have the information ourselves yet. That’s exactly why we’re requesting a comprehensive consultation plan from the Minister.”

The City has not been part of any formal community consultation process on offshore wind farm proposals to date.
